Hanging Basket Bracket, Blacksmithing skills training Course

Our Blacksmithing course is aimed at anyone who would like to immerse themselves deeper into the world of traditional blacksmithing.

This course is aimed at the keen hobbyist, those considering blacksmithing as a career, or those who have carried out forge work previously and would like to broaden their skills. Your instructors, Jessica and Tim, both have many years’ experience and were themselves taught by one of the top master blacksmiths in the country.

It is a weeklong course on Monday 9th to Friday 13th September 2024 from 9.30 am until 4.30 pm. All appropriate PPE, drinks and snacks are included but please bring your own packed lunch. These exclusive courses are currently only running once a year and limited to six attendees, so don’t miss out!

This course is based around the creation of a bespoke hanging basket specially designed to incorporate numerous traditional blacksmithing techniques; which you may take home at the end of an exciting week along with a certificate issued on completion of the course.

THE COURSE DESCRIPTION


Day one

General forging and forming focusing on: Ribbon scroll, Bevel scroll & Snub-end scroll.

Processes learnt- Introduction to Fire control, General anvil forging, drawing down & upsetting, setting down, general forming, Scrolling and fixings typical forging mistakes.

Day Two

Top horizonal bar- Healed tenon, Round tapered hook

Processes learnt- Controlled Upsetting, introduction to smith and striking for forging, the use of anvil tooling and top tooling, controlled tapering, bending, advanced fire control and firewelding.

Day Three

Vertical back plate- Split Fishtail scroll, Decorative tapered scroll with texturing

Processes learnt- controlled forging, cutting and forming (split Fishtail taper), laying out and general forge fixing preparations.

Day Four

Punching holes including smith and striking

Processes learnt- Punching holes using slot & round punches, Drifting and sizing holes. Punching & correcting holes in flat and curve faces.

Day Five

Riveting the bracket together and finishing it with beeswax

Processes learnt- Hot Riveting and tenoning, Finishing and hot waxing.
