Our immersive two-day course offers a unique opportunity to do just that. Delve into the rich history of the axe — one of humanity’s oldest and most versatile tools, with origins tracing back to the Stone Age — and experience the satisfaction of creating your very own hatchet. This all-purpose, portable axe is ideal for chopping, splitting small logs, carving, or general bushcraft.
You will craft your hatchet using the finest materials: high-carbon steel for a durable, sharp edge, paired with a hickory shaft for optimal shock absorption and balance. Guided by our expert and approachable blacksmiths, you will master the essential processes of forging, grinding, heat-treating, and hafting to produce a truly bespoke hand-forged axe.
No prior experience is required, though completing one of our standard day courses first can be advantageous.
Pricing is per person and includes participation in a small, intimate group of up to six, supported by two experienced tutors. A £180 deposit secures your place, with the remaining £219 due six weeks before your experience day.
A hearty lunch, snacks, and drinks are all included, along with PPE, materials, and fuel — just bring yourself and your enthusiasm!
Cancellations
Cancellations made within 14 days of the scheduled experience date are non-refundable.
Cancellations made more than 14 days before the experience date will receive a 50% refund of the total booking cost.
Refunds will be issued to the original payment method within a reasonable timeframe.

You may reschedule your experience day up to 14 days before your scheduled arrival date at no additional charge.

What to Wear-
No fleeces or coats that are highly flammable. We would recommend Hoodies and/or sweatshirts
Over boot jeans
Hair tied back and no jewellery
Sturdy footwear such as steel-toe-capped or walking boots
We provide all PPE which includes safety glasses, ear plugs and aprons
During the winter months, it can be very chilly in the workshop, despite the fires, so please wear plenty of suitable clothing.
